The Faust Theme. This course examines humanity’s continuing search for spiritual and intellectual self-realization. The course traces the symbolic figure of Faust and his changing image from the Renaissance to modern times. It examines the cultural and philosophical ideas that shaped the search for self in each age.   

The course texts are a play (Doctor Faustus) by Christopher Marlowe, a poetic drama (Faust) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and a dramatic poem (Peer Gynt) by Henrik Ibsen.
